With Schrader's past winners spot, and a No.82 team eager to start the season, the pairing just made sense. <P> Schrader will pilot the No. 82 Red Bull Toyota for the February 6 feature race at Daytona International Speedway. Scott Speed, the full- time driver of the No. 82, is not one of the drivers eligible to compete in the Shootout. Speed will take back the reins of the Red Bull Toyota for the Daytona 500 on February 14. <P> "Kenny's desire and dedication to NASCAR has always made him a favorite among fans and throughout the garage area," said VP and General Manager Jay Frye. "We re excited he approached us with the idea and are looking forward to giving him the opportunity he deserves and has earned. <P> The NASCAR veteran earned a starting spot in this season's race by winning the event in both 1989 and 1990. Schrader has graced the high banks of Daytona 45 times in his 25-year NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career, leading 298 laps, and earning seven top-five and 22 top-10 finishes. <P>  I am tremendously excited to be in a top-caliber car, said Schrader.  Pairing up with a strong teammate like Brian Vickers and the whole Red Bull organization for this event has me on Cloud 9. (Red Bull PR) <P> <H2>Former NASCAR Driver Dies</H2> Larry Frank, winner of the 1962 Southern 500 in one of the most surreal finishes in NASCAR history and a longtime Greenville businessman, died Tuesday. He was 80. <P> A native of West Virginia, Frank was a Golden Gloves boxer and ex-Marine who took to racing like a duck to water. He raced motorcycles as a young man, according to wife Margaret Frank, and had a successful career in midget and sprint car racing. <P> From 1956 through 1966 he competed on the NASCAR Grand National circuit  as the big-league was known then -- running 103 events with 10 top-five finishes and 32 top-10. <P> His best year was in 1962 when he finished 14th in points and won the only race of his career at Darlington International Raceway. <P> Frank was convinced he had won though he finished the race on two blown tires and coasted to a stop. As he walked back to the garage, Frank passed legendary driver Junior Johnson celebrating in victory lane. Drivers David Pearson and Marvin Panch also thought they had won. <P>  I had a lap lead on the field, and the scorers lost a lap, he said in stories published by The Greenville News.  We knew we had won it before we left the race track, Frank said.  The NASCAR scoring was pretty radical then. There had been a lot of mistakes, and it was pretty much confusion. But Bob Colvin (the track president) caught me after the race and said there was no way Junior won. He said,  We ll straighten it out. You won the race.  <P> Protests were filed and late that night Frank was called at a motel in Florence and told he was the official winner. He picked up his trophy the next day. The official finish order was Frank, Johnson, Panch and Pearson.  They took a picture with the trophy sitting on the hood of the car, Frank said.  But it still wasn t like being in victory lane. <P> It was the pinnacle of a career indulged in a variety of racing events.  Wherever I d find a race track. I d get a ride with somebody and win a race, he told The News .  I really felt like I could come to NASCAR and learn how to drive stock cars and win races. <P> Racing part-time wasn t easy. In his final season he earned a ninth and 10th finish in his only two starts. Frank lived in North Carolina for a time, his wife said, then moved to Greenville where he opened a body shop. When the shop burned to the ground more than 30 years ago, he rebuilt Larry Frank s Auto Body Shop on Fork Shoals Road. <P> Margaret Frank said her husband was diagnosed with lymphoma six months ago and essentially beat it but never regained his strength.  He was a tough old bird with a tenacious attitude and spirit, she said.  He was well-respected, well-thought of in the community. <P> Along with his wife at their home in Piedmont, Frank was also survived by sons Larry and Rob and two grandchildren, she said. She said Tuesday night that funeral arrangements were incomplete.<a href="http://www.greenvilleonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=20101060342" target="new">(greenvilleonline.com)</a> <P> <H2>Keyed-Up Signs Doug Richert</H2> Keyed-Up Motorsports, the new NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team founded by successful Virginia businessman Raymond Key and making its debut in the 2010 Daytona 500, announced today it has named Doug Richert as the No. 90 team's crew chief. <P> Richert, a California native and NASCAR veteran, is a former championship crew chief in the Cup Series and has worked with many top drivers in his successful career. Richert's NASCAR resume includes crew chief for Dale Earnhardt's first Cup championship and crew chief for 10 of Greg Biffle's Cup wins. <P> "Keyed-Up Motorsports is very thankful to have Doug guiding our No. 90 team." said Raymond Key. "As a past champion crew chief, Doug can definitely get the job done and fulfill our first-year goal of being competitive on the track. NASCAR driver Robby Gordon finished fourth in a Hummer, 4 minutes, 48 seconds off Miller's pace. <P> Miller won Wednesday's grueling 300-mile run across the Atacama Desert from Copiapo north to Antofagasta, finishing in 5:6:15. Sainz was 2:10 behind and Qatar's Nasser Al-Attiyah was third, 4:27 back. <P> Sainz leads Al-Attiyah by 4:37 overall, and Miller is 9:39 off the pace in third. <P> Gordon's effort in Stage 4 resulted in a leap to fourth place overall. He is 59:55 behind Sainz. <P> In motorbikes, Chilean Contardo Lopez won the stage and Cyril Despres was 1:30 behind, allowing the Frenchman to extend his overall lead to 37:37 on Lopez. <P> Versus will provide coverage throughout the United States. A 30-minute daily program featuring highlights from that day's racing will be aired 3:30 p.m. ET daily. The show is set to air Jan. 3-18.
