Michigan has a proud history of the auto industry here and I recently learned that this connection applied to NASCAR as well. NASCAR's roots go back to the need for skilled drivers to deliver moonshine and elude the police. Legend has it that it was born out of this need in the back roads of North Carolina. But Michigan had the technology to build cars and has contributed a great deal to the development of fast cars. <P> When I made a recent visit to Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan, I saw the Michigan-North Carolina connection. <P> Gilmore Car Museum was formed out of the love of cars by Donald Gilmore of Upjohn Pharmaceutics fame. It began in the 1960's as a way for Gilmore to share his personal car collection with his friends. In a recent visit to Gilmore Car Museum, I learned just how close the connection between NASCAR and Michigan's auto industry. <P> Michigan is known for being the home of the Big Three of the auto industry. General Motors, Ford and Chrysler have been an integral part of Michigan's business history and they are also foundational in their support of NASCAR. <P> There are also several small businesses who have contributed to NASCAR. It was these connections that allowed Gilmore Car Museum to put together this exhibit. <P> Jay Follis, director of Marketing at Gilmore, speaks with pride about the personal connections and friendships that brought this great collection of cars from NASCAR's past. <P> For example, Baker Engineered Racing Engines is a west Michigan-based company. Baker built powerplants for NASCAR drivers at a time when each team did not have their own engine builders. Baker-built engines were used by Darrell Waltrip, Dale Earnhardt Sr, Mark Martin, Neil Bonnett, Geoff Bodine and many others. Baker has the distinction of having their engines win over 1,000 races in a three year period during the 1970's, a feat that will probably never be matched in today's self-contained garage environment. <P> <a href="http://www.sweetmfg.biz/" target="new"><font color="ff0000">Sweet Manufacturing, Inc.</font></a>. is a familiar name in racing garages all over the United States. They are the designer and manufacturer of Sweet steering systems. Their quick release steering wheel can be seen in all NASCAR race cars and the concept was born in Kalamazoo Michigan. It is still Sweet's most visible product. Every time a in-car camera shows a shot of a driver, the Sweet decal is shown. <P> The exhibit includes many cars that made history on NASCAR race tracks and includes a historic photo of many NASCAR greats who visited Kalamazoo Speedway for a special occasion during the 1980's. <P> The History of Stock Car Racing exhibit is open seven days a week until October 31.
