How will the new surface at Daytona and realignment of the NASCAR schedule play out? Do organizational changes at Hendrick Motorsports help or hurt reigning five-time champion Jimmie Johnson? And what of his hapless teammate, Dale Earnhardt Jr., who's won just one race in his last 170 Cup starts? <P> Given the opportunity to sit down face-to-face with Johnson in Phoenix, where he was appearing to help promote next month's SUBWAY Fresh Fit 500 race at PIR, I was eager to ask him about the scuttlebutt among drivers regarding possible changes to the Chase points format this year. <P> "As funny as it may sound, NASCAR has really no interest in my opinion of the Chase or what changes I would want to see -- or lack of changes I would want to see," Johnson laughed. The only driver in NASCAR history to win five straight Cup championships, all under the Chase points system, he is arguably the last person who'd favor major changes to the current format. <P> Johnson told me he's spent the offseason away from the sport and unplugged from the rumor mill. "I've kind of disconnected and have been a 'Mr. Mom' of sorts, spending time with my wife and daughter. I've kind of been removed from the racing thing. I've also learned that, regardless of my opinion, (NASCAR is) going to do what's right for the sport and what's right in their minds. It's just unneeded stress to get involved too early, from my standpoint." <P> With testing at Daytona scheduled to begin January 20, Johnson said he expects to hear from NASCAR about possible changes to the Chase some time this week. "They hold meetings with the teams in January and I think it's next week that they sit down with Hendrick Motorsports. I'm sure at that point all of us will find out what's on their minds." <P> While the Daytona 500 remains NASCAR's premiere race, Johnson believes the Phoenix race one week later - the first non-restrictor-plate race of 2011 - will be a major focus of both teams and fans. The race was moved from April to the week after Daytona as part of an overall schedule realignment for the Cup Series this year. "You get off the plate tracks and it's such a different world. I think Phoenix will be a great measuring stick for the teams and who's where with speed. I think it's a good change for Phoenix. There's so much attention that goes into the Daytona 500 and, with the resurfacing they've done, we're going to have one heck of a race and hopefully there will be some fans interested and watching. There's going to be a lot of hype and then it's all going to spill into this market and this race." <P> Fans will also be watching closely to see how Johnson and the other Hendrick drivers fare at Daytona and Phoenix, given the personnel shakeup that occurred at HMS days after the end of the 2010 season. Among the four Hendrick drivers - Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Mark Martin - Jimmie is the only driver who remains teamed with his 2010 crew chief, Chad Knaus. Gordon will be paired with Martin's crew chief, Alan Gustafson; Dale Jr. gets Gordon's crew chief, Steve Letarte; and Martin will have Junior's crew chief, Lance McGrew. <P> Johnson said he expects a settling-in period for all four HMS teams early on. "There's got to be a period - I just don't know what that length of time is going to be. The one thing working in our favor to make it a short period of time is that it's still the same four crew chiefs and it's still the same four drivers. With how our shop is designed, we're family and we have a great relationship. We have great working relationships and they've been there for a long time, so I'm hoping that kind of softens the landing and helps things get off to a quick start. Our teammates have been testing and we have some more testing coming up, so hopefully when we get to Daytona it counts and everybody is right where they need to be." <P> 'Everybody' includes Dale Earnhardt Jr., Johnson's teammate at Hendrick Motorsports, who's been in a serious slump for several seasons. The night before the interview, I heard a national sports commentator say that the reason Junior doesn't win races and championships like Johnson does is that Earnhardt doesn't have Johnson's "focus." <P> <B>Does Jimmie agree with that assessment?</B> <UL> "I'll learn a lot more about his focus and mindset being in the same shop this coming season," said Johnson. "I've known him on a personal level for a lot of years. Since he's come to Hendrick Motorsports, I've seen a much more focused guy than I've ever seen. He's won 18 races, so he has it in there. I kind of lean in the category of confidence. I'm not making excuses for him by any means, but he walks in some tough shoes. It's not an easy world. Over time, what I've seen out of him is, he's just lacking a little bit of confidence. Momentum is hard to really look at and say 'that's what it is,' but I think if we can get some confidence under his belt and get some momentum moving in the right direction, he is capable of doing as much as he wants. <P> "It's easy sometimes to say that he's not motivated but, being with him and working with him, he's engaged, he's there, he's applying himself. We can all do more and I think that's something that we all have to look at in ourselves, whether you're a racecar driver or whatever your job position is: Am I happy in my job? Am I doing all that I can to be as good as I can be? <P> "For myself and Chad Knaus, we certainly have a great relationship and something special has gone on that's never happened before in our sport. We continue to challenge each other each and every year. Communication is a big part of it and I think that Junior being put together with Steve Letarte is going to be a good thing. With Steve's personality, Steve will build his confidence.
