He made the inaugural Chase class in '04 and twice since then, but missed it this year by a slim margin. <P> Under the circumstances, Newman seemed like the perfect person to ask about last week's driver drama at Kansas involving Kyle Busch and David Reutimann. Busch got into Reutimann early in the race and was later hit from behind by him in apparent retaliation. Neither driver had a good finish, with Busch coming in 21st and Reutimann, 35th. <P> Overall, the scuffle was far more harmful to Busch - one of 12 drivers competing in the Chase - than it was for Reutimann, who's not in the Chase. As a result of the fracas, Busch fell four spots in the Chase from third to seventh, while Reutimann slipped just one place from 17th to 18th. <P> Speaking one-on-one with Newman at a driver appearance in Phoenix Wednesday for the "Troop Newman" program (more on that in a moment), I asked whether he thought there should be an unwritten rule about the way drivers outside the Chase race those contending for the championship. "Oh, no, no," he said emphatically. "We're all racing for the trophy that day. If they wanted to have a separate Chase with ten or twelve drivers going for a championship, then they can take them off to a different racetrack on a different weekend, if that's the way it's going to be. But that's not the way NASCAR intended it." <P> Though Newman didn't see the specific incidents at Kansas between Busch and Reutimann, he said can relate to the frustrations on both sides. "I saw that Kyle was pretty hot at the end of the race, but I didn't see why or what played out. But that's racing, man. There are tempers, there are aggravations. Every part of road rage that goes on in daily life with most people is out there on the racetrack as well. I understand it and it's part of the sport." <P> Newman has had his own share of frustrations this year, including losing out at Richmond to Clint Bowyer for the 12th and final Chase spot. It was later revealed that Bowyer's Richmond car was extremely close to failing inspection - which it did the following week after he won the first Chase race in Loudon. Bowyer was docked 150 points and has been mired at the bottom of the Chase standings ever since. <P> Does Newman think things should have been handled differently so that his team would have made the Chase instead of Bowyer's? "In respect to his situation, I don't know all the particulars as to how it all unfolded. But, in the end, NASCAR did what they felt was right, and whether the team - or teams, depending on how you look at it - feel it's justified is just everybody's opinion." <P> As a non-Chaser this year, Newman's No. 39 team could play at spoiler role in the remaining races by winning at a track like Phoenix, where he took the checkers back in April. "I've always enjoyed racing here. The track is challenging and unique. I've been blessed with good race cars and good teams out here to make a difference. We've got a good short-track program at Stewart-Haas Racing and I look forward to bringing the US Army Chevrolet out for this fall's race." <P> Ryan noted that he will be running a special paint scheme for the Kobalt Tools 500 at PIR on November 14, which is just after Veteran's Day. "It will actually be little pictures of families that are in the Army plastered all over the entire race car. Obviously, we take a lot of pride in the relationship we have with the US Army, but I've always had a sense of pride in what NASCAR is and that sense of family. When you mix the two together, it will be special." <P> In keeping with the military theme, Newman spent the morning in Phoenix promoting PIR's "Troop Newman" program, which allows race fans to donate money to be used exclusively to fund race tickets for military members to attend the November Cup race. He met with Arizona National Guard soldiers and their families, who were also treated to a free barbecue lunch.
