Connie's Michigan NASCAR Friday Notebook

Signs Everywhere

Michigan International Speedway has found it beneficial to have their own sign and graphics department, located just outside turn two on track property. The shop produces over 250 signs during a race season including all billboards and stickers seen on speedway property. With seven different races at the track each year, there are over 100 signs changed between race weekends.

Goodyear Tire Facts

Tire Circumference: Left - 87.3 in..... Right - 88.6 in.

Technical Inspection Inflation: Left Front 30 psi
                                Right Front 48 psi
                                Left Rear 30 psi
                                Right Rear 45 psi

Minimum Recommended Inflation: Left Front 23 psi Right Front 42 psi Left Rear 23 psi Right Rear 39 psi

  • Estimated Pit Window: Every 48-52 laps, based on fuel mileage.

  • This is the same combination of left- and right-side tires Goodyear has brought to Michigan since June 2001, making this the fifth straight race for this set-up at this track.

  • This specific tire combination was also run by Winston Cup teams at Michigan's sister track - California - earlier this season

As on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Michigan

  • Air pressure in the inner liners must be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.

Mark Keto, Lead Engineer, Stock Car Tire Development Quote "At Michigan, like at California Speedway earlier in the season, tires will really only be a factor in relation to pit strategy. These races often come down to fuel mileage, so depending how the caution flags fall, teams may exercise the option of a two-tire stop to gain track position."

    Michigan Announcing Team

Michigan International Speedway's Public Address announcing team is one of the most experienced in the business Jim Mueller and Larry Henry. Mueller is the veteran of the group with over a decade of experience, taking care of pre and post race duties along with hanging out in timing and scoring for practice and qualifying. Mueller first worked at Michigan International Speedway, but shares the announcing duties at Daytona International Speedway, Richmond International Raceway, North Carolina Speedway and Homestead-Miami Speedway. The broadcasting partner, Larry Henry is in his second season behind the microphone and sports director at WWJ-950 in Detroit as well as a former announcer for the CART radio network. Both Mueller and Henry host high profile Sunday night radio shows in Motown. Mueller, with co-host Jeff DeFran, host the Inside Lane on WJR 760 AM while Henry hosts Pit Pass U.S.A. on Team 1270 AM WXYT.

    This isn't your local KOA

Michigan International Speedway is registered as the largest campground in the State of Michigan with three different camping areas on speedway property. The Brooklyn Highway Campground off Brooklyn Road across from the track has 1,681 reserved spaces. The infield of 150 acres can easily house over 2,600 campsites. The final campground, Cabela's Campground off the M-50 entrance to the speedway is open on a first come first served basis starting Thursday of each race week and holds about 1,000 campsites

U.S. Army To Celebrate 228th Anniversary

The U.S Army will celebrate its 228th anniversary in style with a special pre-race show prior to the Father’s Day Sirius 400 (race 15 of 34) on June 15 at Michigan International Speedway.

Some of the most elite divisions of the Army will be participating, which includes the 82nd Airborne Division, 101st Airborne Division, Military District of Washington, 3/17th Cavalry (10th Mountain Division) and the U.S Army Golden Knights Parachute Team.

  • The patriotic pre-race show will begin with the 82nd Airborne All-American Chorus as they perform several patriotic songs.

  • The show will continue with The Flag Story, a fast-paced travel through the growth of nation and the history and role of the United States Army. The program features soldiers in period uniforms from the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, Desert Storm and ongoing missions. The Flag Story features more than 100 soldiers from the 3rd U.S Infantry (The Old Guard) from Fort Myer, Virginia, dressed in period uniforms and in ceremonial dress blues carrying the state and territorial flags.

  • Immediately following The Flag Story, the 3rd Squadron 17th Cavalry will perform a special demonstration flyover, which will include four Kiowa Warrior helicopters.

  • After driver introductions, the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team will entertain the crowd with a show that will begin high above Michigan International Speedway and land on the U.S Army logo on the speedway’s tri-oval grass. The U.S Army’s Golden Knights have been entertaining crowds for 43 years with their precision aerial maneuvers while falling to earth at speeds reaching 120 miles per hour, then landing dead center on their target.

  • Prior to the invocation and National Anthem, the 82nd Airborne chorus will be back to give their outstanding rendition of Lee Greenwood’s hit song, “God Bless the USA”, as the 101st Airborne Division based out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky presents the colors.

    Rain Cancels Race

Tony Stewart, current NASCAR Winston Cup Champion and Dave Blaney, owner of Sharon Speedway, had plans to return to the track Thursday night to competed in the "Gibson-Governor Insurance Modified" dirt track V-8 Modified division. Last year Blaney finished 2nd and Steward came in 4th, each had wanted to beat that effort, however heavy rains all day Thursday called an end to the event.

Stewart, who flipped his USAC Midget at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, Illinois just prior to the Pocono race joked, he spend last night laying on his couch and look - NO sprained thumb using the television remote.

  • Sharon Speedway is one of the oldest, continuously running weekly racetracks in the United States, the track is located 10 miles north of I-80 in Hartford, Ohio. Owned by NASCAR Winston Cup driver Dave Blaney, Jim Weller Sr., Ron Kirila and Bill Kirila, and operated by their families, the speedway features a 3/8-mile dirt racing surface and seating for more than 8,000. The track holds weekly racing every Saturday night from mid-April through mid-August, and over Labor Day weekend hosts the annual Sharon Nationals. This season, the track also will feature several special events, including the World of Outlaws, BRP Modified Tour with Tony Stewart and Dave Blaney, AMA Progressive Insurance U.S. Flat Track Motorcycles and the XTREME DirtCar Series.
